Anyone know anything about telescopes?

By that I mean, I'm considering buying one for my daughter for her birthday and I don't want to get her a cheap one that won't be interesting at all, but I also don't want to spend $300 on it.
She is VERY interested in space and recently told me that she wants to be an astrophysicist when she grows up.

Any tips on what to look for/stay away from?

I don't know a lot about them Mac, but I've seen a fairly nice looking & sounding one in the National Geographic catalog that sells for $169. Upon poking further at their website, they have a few options, including an award winning entry level model.

I hope this isn't too late to be helpful.
